The 49 Commands of Christ

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:20)

Our church meets for family-integrated Bible study each Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. — the whole family attends together. One of the studies we have completed is the Commands of Christ. These lessons were presented using PowerPoint with multimedia sound and video clips to hold the attention of younger students. Pastor Robert Rohlin teaches these lessons, and as a father of eight children, he knows how to speak in a way children can understand.

Why study the 49 Commands of Christ?

Jesus Himself defined discipleship when He gave the Great Commission — “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:20). To become an effective disciple of Christ, you need to know, understand, and keep His commands.

The Greek word tereo, translated “keep” in John 14:21 where it refers to keeping Christ’s commands, is an interesting word. It can mean “to guard, to watch, to observe closely, to hold fast” — the same word used of the care the Philippian jailer was to exercise in keeping Paul and Silas from escaping. In the days of wind-driven ships, navigators used the phrase “keeping the stars,” meaning they used the stars to chart a course across the ocean. The commands of Christ are dependable lights for charting a course throughout life.

As you study the Commands of Christ, you are learning principles that will:

  • Guide you through difficult decisions
  • Keep you from making unwise decisions
  • Enable you to live as an example to your family and the world
  • Help you live life Christ’s way so you can see His blessing in your life

We hope you will come and study the Commands of Christ with us. But if you miss a lesson or want to catch up on the lessons we have already covered, they are provided here as a resource for you.
